Owen Thomas is an independent producer and writer known for his award-winning short films, including Dragfox, which stars his childhood (and adulthood) hero, Ian McKellen, in the titular role. The film premiered at Telluride in 2024 and has gone on to win numerous accolades, including a BAFTA and RTS award, and a nomination for the Student Academy Awards. With well over a hundred official festival selections - many qualifying for BIFA, BAFTA, and Oscar consideration - the success of Dragfox has firmly established Owen as a rising talent in the industry.

He is currently developing a diverse slate of original projects - spanning film, television, audio drama, and literature - under his banner, Tenement Productions. As a working-class, queer, half-deaf producer from rural Scotland, Owen has a passion for underdog stories and is committed to supporting creatives who, like him, don’t typically fit the industry’s traditional mould. Were it not for a BBC scholarship, he may never have broken into the industry himself - so he is determined to pay it forward by creating opportunities for fellow under-represented voices.

Before pursuing an MA in Producing at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), Owen worked as a journalist across the UK and Ireland following his undergraduate degree in Glasgow. His career evolved into making documentaries and factual entertainment programmes, supporting in editorial roles at organisations including the BBC, Banijay, and ITV. These experiences have sharpened his storytelling instincts, equipping him with the tools to develop compelling narratives across a range of formats.
